Stocks Impounding Reservoir is located in an upland area within the Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, which by its nature and location is extremely sensitive to disturbance. The area supports a rich and diverse flora and fauna with some species relying on these habitats for their entire lifecycle.
Preconstruction activities required the production and agreement with the Client of; documentary evidence detailing control measures for all necessary isolation and interruption of incoming reservoir flows, agreed access routes, permits to work, plant transfer and communication and liaison with Reservoirs Headworks Controllers.
Construction works required the excavation for and installation of 370m of 1350mm high reinforced concrete wave wall along the crest of the impounding reservoir. Inner and outer faces of the wave wall were then clad with stonework masonry and copings together with ancillary drainage, road construction and footpaths.
A 1 tonne weight limit on the crest of the embankment required the use of winches and special hoist arrangements for the import and removal of materials.
