Bridgewater Canal Minewater Treatment

Value: £2,900,000

The scheme was designed to clean the mine water discharge from the old mine works that flow into the Bridgewater Canal.

A new pumping station was constructed, which pumps effluent via a new twin 315mm diameter, 950m long rising main laid in the canal tow path, woodlands and under the motorway access roads, into settlement lagoons, wetland ponds and reed beds.

Outfall structures into the canal, concrete sludge drying beds, emergency overflow pipes, a new access track, hard and soft landscaping were also constructed as part of the contract.

Pipe laying techniques included auger boring and directional drilling to cross the Bridgewater Canal and motorway access road whilst much of the open cut had to be carried out by hand.

Wet wells 8m deep needed to be constructed using de-watering techniques.

This project was awarded the Green Organisation Green Apple National Bronze Award for Environmental Best Practice.
