The Project

The former 67.4 hectares (166.5 acres) colliery site required reclamation to provide an open landform that includes a fishing pond, a recreation arena, construction of paths and tracks, bird scrapes, extensive planting of trees and redistribution of excavated material.

The Design and Construct contract work scope included clearance of a former sewerage treatment works, construction of concrete culvert, construction of permanent access to the site, formation of drainage channels, berms and cascades, removal and replacement of two pedestrian bridges, haulage and redistribution of excavated material and previously stockpiled sub soils, provision of children’s play areas, diversion of various utilities apparatus, archaeological assessment and pressure grouting of a disused canal tunnel, construction of a gabion retaining wall structure to facilitate canal works, removal of an ex-colliery bridge and replace with a box culvert, recovery of coal and fencing.

The formation of a 1.8ha recreation arena including trim trail was also carried out along with, liming, fertilising, cultivating and seeding, community and Broadleaved Woodland and other planting works and soil amelioration to Forestry Commission specification.

Significant third party management and liaison was undertaken.

This project was awarded the Green Organisation Green Apple National Champion Award for Environmental Best Practice/Reclamation.
