The Project

A project for the new build and major refurbishment of a cluster of five combined sewer overflows with unsatisfactory intermittent discharges to receiving watercourses within the catchments of Rochdale & Bolton. These were undertaken as part of the United Utilities AMP 4 Capital Investment Programme.

The five sites were located in both urban areas and within existing waste water treatment works sites between Chorley and Milnrow in the North West of England.

The work scope included civil, mechanical and electrical permanent design.

Open cut pipe work from 600mm to 1500mm and up to 5.5m deep was carried out in variable ground conditions ranging from cohesive soils to sands and gravels.

Construction of reinforced concrete underground structures requiring the excavation and installation of piled cofferdams, dealing with significant existing sewer flows, specialist diamond concrete cutting and dismantling works for refurbishment of existing underground structures, management and installation of mechanical and electrical works incorporating screens, motor control centres and telemetry and fabrication and installation of metalwork and GRP ladders, walkways and handrails was also included.
