Posted: 18 Aug 2010

The new facility at Stanley Way Waste Transfer Station was officially opened on Friday 13th August.

This design and construct project was undertaken by CHC Ltd for client Lancashire County Council and will enable operator West Lancashire Borough Council to improve the efficiency of its refuse and recycling service.

Works incorporated the construction of a 3500m2 portal steel framed and clad waste transfer station building, pre-cast concrete push walls and concrete bunker walls, a reinforced concrete external hardstanding, two weighbridges, office building and all access roads. Site remediation, preparation, earthworks and mechanical and electrical installation was also included.

This new facility will provide state-of-the-art equipment to enable refuse and recycling materials collected in the borough to be stored before being taken to the county council’s new facility at Farrington for further treatment and recycling. It will also maximise the amount of material for recycling by providing purpose-designed, under-cover storage facilities for garden waste, glass, paper, card, cans, cardboard and textiles where there is no risk of cross-contamination.

Dream Excellence

Posted: 25 Feb 2010

Dream was awarded Highly Commended at the recent Institution of Civil Engineers North West Merit Awards 2010 for Civil Engineering Excellence.

Dream highlights a successful project delivered by CHC in the role of principal contractor for client St.Helens Council and a great example of teamwork with all parties involved in the design and construction process, which included ARUP, Liverpool Biennial, Evans Concrete Products, Cordek Ltd and ICP Ltd.

Dream is an artistic 20 metres high concrete structure on top of the former Sutton Manor Colliery in St.Helens, located close to Junction 7 of the M62. The concept, which takes the form of a girl’s head with her eyes closed seemingly in a dream-like state, was developed by renowned artist Jaume Plensa

The sculpture was commissioned by St.Helens Council as part of ‘The Big Art Project’, an ambitious public art initiative from Channel 4 supported by Arts Council England, the national development agency for the arts, and The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity.
